Abstract

1282505 Removing iron from titaniferous material BRITISH TITAN Ltd 22 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38477/68 Headings C1A and C1N Fe is removed from a particulate titaniferous material by heating at 700-900‹C. to oxidize the Fe to Fe<SP>3+</SP>, contacting with a reducing agent at 600-1100‹ C. to reduce the Fe to Fe<SP>2+</SP>, leaching with aqueous HCl to form FeCl 2 solution, and calcining the solid -at 800-1000‹ C. The initial material may be ilmenite or leucoxene, e.g. beach sand, with a particle size of 50-300 Á. The heating steps may be carried out in a fluidized bed or rotary kiln. Reduction may be effected using H 2 Œ steam or a hydrocarbon containing 1-4 carbon atoms (as desrcibed in Specifications 1,282,503 and 1,282,324 resp.) or CO or-carbon. The HCl may have a concentration of 18-22% and a temperature of from 80‹ C. to b.pt. The solid may be agitated with a gas, e.g. N 2 , during leaching, or the acid may be recirculated upwardly through a column of the solid. A 2- stage leaching process may be used, as described in Specification 1,282,506. The calcination is carried out as described in Specification 1,282,507. The FeCl 2 may be converted into Fe oxide or Fe and the HCl recovered. The solid product may be mixed with coke and reacted with Cl 2 to give TiCl 4 .
