Abstract

Separation of iron from titanium containing ores. This process comprises the steps: (a) the ore, such as ilmenite or leucoxene, is heated at 700-900 degrees C in an oxidising atmosphere to convert the iron present partly in the divalent state to Fe (III); (b) the material is subjected to reduction with a C1-4 hydrocarbon, or H2 with addition of water vapour, at 600-900 degrees C to convert the total Fe (III) to Fe (II); (c) Fe (II) is leached out with aqueous HC1 (to be subsequently recovered as a fine Fe powder, or high purity iron oxide); (d) the remaining Ti-Containing powder is heated at 800-1000 degrees C to expel impurities and effect agglomeration before further processing. The preliminary oxidation (a) facilitates the subsequent leaching (c) and recovery of iron. The process yields a high grade Ti source.
