Abstract

1407520 Fe and Cu salts; jarosites E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 28 June 1973 [28 June 1972 27 Sept 1972 4 June 1973] 30885/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A Cu-containing mineral is treated in the presence of Fe and S with both HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 , and the resulting solution containing Fe and Cu ions is treated to reduce sufficiently the content of Fe<SP>3+</SP>, NO 3 <SP>-</SP> and other impurities before electrowinning to allow production of Cu having a conductivity at least 100% of the I.A.C. Standard. The Fe<SP>3+</SP> content may be reduced below 5 gpl. and the NO 3 <SP>-</SP> below 1 gpl. The mineral may or may not contain Fe, e.g. CuFeS 2 , Cu 5 FeS 4 , Cu 2 S or Cu 9 S 5 ; additional Fe<SP>3+</SP> may be added if desired or required to assist to solubilize Cu, giving Fe<SP>2+</SP> which removes NO 3 through being oxidized thereby to Fe<SP>3+</SP>. Excess Fe<SP>3+</SP> may thereafter be removed by precipitation as a jarosite, e.g. by adding NH 4 OH. Remaining Fe<SP>2+</SP> may also be removed at this stage by conversion to Fe<SP>3+</SP> with air, the Fe<SP>3+</SP> being precipitated. Both NO 3 <SP>-</SP> and Fe<SP>3+</SP> removal may be assisted with heat and pressure. A multi-stage continuous treatment may be used with mineral concentrate and acid mixture in countercurrent. Other impurities may be removed as follows; Se or Te by treatment with Cu powder; Zn by preferential leaching with the spent electrolysed solution or by precipitation as ZnS. Build up of impurities in a continuous process involving recycling is avoided by continuous purging, e.g. of 10% of the spent electrowinning solution.
