Abstract
The recycle gas contg. CO, CO2, H2 and H2O, is passed with carbon and/or hydrocarbons through a plasma of the gas itself in order to impart sufficient energy and a high enough temp. for the endothermic reaction of CO2, H2O and carbon or hydrocarbons to give CO and H2. The gas, after passing wholly or partly through the plasma, may be catalytically treated to further reduce the CO2 and H2O content. The gas after heating in the plasma may be reacted with a solid bed of carbon, or carbon dust may be mixed with it before passing through the plasma. The product gas contg. 5% (pref. 2%) max. of CO2 + H2O, is suitable for metallurgical processes or as protective or carburising gas. Use of a plasma allows direct heating of the gas in a simple and economic manner.
