Abstract

930,008. Reducing iron ore. ELEKTROKEMISK A.S. Nov. 27, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 40464/59. Class 72. A process of electric smelting comprises charging an electric smelting furnace with a carbonaceous reducing agent amounting to 10-75% of the carbon required to reduce the one in the form of pieces, the remainder of the carbonaceous material being present in pellet form in admixture with the ore. As shown, an electric smelting furnace 14 is fed with carbonaceous reducing agent from a bin 17. Binding agent, coal flour, and finely ground ore from silos 1, 2, 3 are fed to a pelletizing saucer 6 and thence to a preheating shaft 7 which may be heated to 500-900‹ C. by combustion of the reduction gases from the smelting furnace. After preheating the pellets are fed to the smelting furnace which is held at 900-1100‹ C. There may be two bins 17 and two preheating shafts 7 to a single smelting furnace.
