Abstract
1,128,719. Producing tin. CONZING RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. May 2, 1967 [May 2, 1966], No.20251/67. Heading C7D. Tin ores and/or concentrates containing iron are agglomerated and continuously smelted in a low shaft blast-furnace, the Fe-Sn alloy and the low tin slag being substantially continuously tapped together into a second furnace in which an oxidant (e.g. an oxygen containing gas, air, in which is entrained a high SnO 2 material) is injected to form molten tin and a low tin slag, these last products being tapped separately continuously or semi-continuously from the second furnace. The agglomerated particulate ore/concentrate feed preferably comprises composite pellets containing carbon produced by pelletizing a blend of the tin values and coal, and optionally lime, which are then carbonized. Carbonaceous reducing agents, scrap pig iron or ferro-silicon may be added to the slag in the second furnace to further reduce its tin content. The second furnace is preferably an elongated launder-type furnace.
