Abstract

Ores of iron or other metals are charged into a shaft furnace together with dense briquettes of coal which has sufficient volatile matter to produce hydrogen in the furnace and which on high temperature distillation forms dense rigid coke without cracking or binding. After the briquettes have been initially charged the amount of oxygen per ton of metal supplied by the blast is reduced to less than the amount contained in 1000 m3 of air under normal conditions. The charging rate of carbonaceous material per ton of metal produced may also be reduced as compared with that conventionally used; the blast may consist of oxygen-enriched air, or of substantially pure oxygen, when the furnace top gas may be subsequently used in chemical synthesis.
