Abstract

Iron ore is melted and reduced in a furnace to which a carbonaceous material (such as a liquid hydrocarbon) and an oxidant are also charged. A part of the carbonaceous material is charged into or on to the bath, while the remainder is introduced into the space above the bath either together with or separatley from the oxidant. This latter portion may be of different composition, as its sulphur content is of less importance, and its supply rate may be regulated in accordance with the temperature of the refractory lining of the furnace. The effluent gases may be used to pre-reduce the ore and subsequently to preheat the carbonaceous fuel and/or oxidant, or may be burnt and used to preheat the charge materials. The process is preferably carried out in a furnace inclined at up to 40 degrees to the horizontal and rotating at at least 6 revolutions per minute.
