Abstract
1,163,405. Reducing iron ore. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Feb.15, 1967 [Feb.24, 1966], No.8221/66. Heading C7D. Iron ore and fluxing agents are introduced into a furnace together with a carbonaceous material and an oxidant whereby the ore is melted and reduced. The carbonaceous material is added to the slag layer, while a part of the oxidant is also introduced into that layer but at a level below that of the carbonaceous material, whereby a controlled oxygen potential gradient is maintained in the slag layer through which the metal falls. The remainder of the oxidant is introduced above the bath level to burn the gases evolved and provide heat for the reaction, while the gases leaving the furnace may be used to pre-reduce the ore, and/or with or without combustion to pre-heat the raw materials. The carbonaceous material may be solid, liquid or gaseous but by using a gaseous hydrocarbon the reduction of impurities from the ore is minimized. Suitable fluxes are lime, dolomute, silica or felspar, while the oxidant introduced into the slag layer may include oxides of iron.
