Abstract

<PICT:0961408/C6-C7/1> Steel is produced by feeding a partially reduced mixture of iron ore, carboniferous fuel such as coal, and flux e.g. lime pellets, in a heated condition into a first electro-furnace, smelting the mixture to produce a primary pig iron melt and an iron-rich slag, smelting the iron-rich slag produced with further carboniferous fuel such as coke in a second electro-furnace to produce a secondary pig iron melt, and refining both the pig iron melts in a refining furnace such as an electro- or a Siemens-Martin furnace. As shown, the initial mixture may be ignited by hot gas and air in a sintering device 1 to reduce to about 70% by weight of the original charge, and the partially reduced may be fed e.g. at 1200 DEG C. into the reaction chamber 4 of an electric furnace container 2, the iron-rich slag produced flowing over a water cooled ceramic dam 3 into the reaction chamber 5 for further reduction. Each chamber 4 and 5, forming the first and second electro-furnaces, may be provided with independently operated electrodes 6. Both the pig iron melts are tapped via tap-holes 7 to be refined in another electro-furnace 8, the iron-poor slag being withdrawn through tap-hole 9.
