Abstract

1290436 Reducing nickeliferous or cobaltiferous iron ores L S MOUSSOULOS 26 March 1970 [30 April 1969] 14963/70 Heading C7D Ferro-Ni or -Co is produced from poor nickeliferous or cobaltiferous iron ore by grinding, mixing and nodulizing solid carbonaceous fuel e. g. coke with the ore to form homogeneous pellets, heating the pellets at between 1000 and 1200‹C. e. g. in a rotary kiln for preliminary reduction of the Ni or Co and to form in each pellet an outer shell containing Fe 2 O 3 , and smelting e.g. between 1450 and 1550‹ C. by direct heating with the flame of at least one burner while agitating to renew continuously the slag-molten metal interface. Solid non-ground carbonaceous fuel and fluxes e.g. coke and CaF 2 may be added to the smelting furnace; e. g. a rotary furnace turning about an inclined axis, heated inside by two oil burners close to its exit end, lined with magnesia bricks, and having its shell cooled by water spraying. Melts of alloy and slag may be simultaneously and continuously evacuated into a settling tank under an exit end of the smelting furnace, the tank being provided with an electric induction heating coil in a lower part and with water cooling in an upper part.
