Abstract

<PICT:1095880/C6-C7/1> Pre-reduced solid material (e.g. sponge iron) containing heat-generating elements such as carbon, phosphorus and silicon is introduced into a bath of liquid steel into which oxygen is blown, while metal is continuously withdrawn from the bath to maintain the mass of the latter constant. The pre-reduced material may be added in the form of pellets, or may be blown into the bath by a stream of hot reducing gases such as those evolved in the process. Additional materials of high calorific value, such as coke or graphite, ferro-phosphorus, ferro-silicon, aluminium or ferro-aluminium may also be charged to the bath; these may be mixed with the iron bearing material or may be injected in a blast of air. Further heat may be supplied by combustion of all or part of the evolved gases above the bath by means of a stream of secondary oxygen. The process may be carried out in apparatus of the type illustrated, wherein pelleted ore from hopper 1 is fed into vessel 2 in which an emulsion of metal and slag is formed by a jet of oxygen from lance 5. Thus emulsion overflows into receiver 6 where the metal and slag separate out and are discharged. The gases evolved in vessel 2 are partially burnt by oxygen from lance 10 and are then discharged through stack 9.
