890,123. Charging loose material. KNAPSACK-GRIESHEIM A.G. Feb. 25, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 6589/59. Class 51 (2). In a vacuum furnace 1 heated by electrodes 12 around which at 16 hydrogen may be introduced, pulverulent or granular reactants are introduced by a stationary tube (not shown) entering a rotary, double-walled feed tube 8 with a deflected lower end 3. Feed tube 8, which is cooled, passes through bearings 11 and a further cooling jacket 5 surrounded by a heat-insulating tube 4 itself disposed in a pipe 15. Spent material may be removed by a movable grate 7 and volatile material by an offtake 13 which may be connected to a vacuum pump. The furnace may be used for the production of magnesium vapour from dolomite and ferrosilicon.
