777,266. Making aluminium - silicon alloys; mixing machines. SCHMlDT METALLSCHMELZWERK GES., K. Nov. 1, 1954 [Nov. 2, 1953; Feb. 19, 1954; March 10, 1954], No. 31551/54. Classes 82(1) and 86 Apparatus for introducing powdered, granular or pelleted substances, which tend to float, into the body of a liquid, e.g. molten metal, comprises container for the liquid, a tube the mouth of which lies below the level of the liquid, means for causing the substance only continuously to feed through the tube to the liquid, and means for distributing the substance in the liquid. As shown in Fig. 1, the tube 4, e.g., of carbon or electrographite, extends into the metal melt 2 and is fixed at its lower end so as to rotate with an inner tube 7 into which the granular substance is fed from a hopper 16. A worm 9 mounted on a red fixed to framework 15 is carried within the inner tube 7 and paddles 6 are mounted on the tube 4. The inner tube 7 is rotated by a motor 21 so that the granular substance is forced into the melt by the worm 9 and is distributed therein by the paddles 6. The tube 4 is cooled by air from a pipe 12 and the cover for the container is hollow and also is air cooled. In one modification the worm 9 is omitted and the substance is drawn into the melt by the suction caused by the paddles. In other modifications the tube 4 from which the paddles are omitted is stationary, the worm 9 is rotated and the melt is agitated by (a) paddles mounted on a separate vertical rotating shaft, (b) an induction winding around the container, (c) compressed air injected through the side of the container, or (d) a vertically reciprocating plunger having one or more pistons. The container or other parts may also be rotated or rocked continuously or intermittently. As shown in Fig. 10, the substance is introduced by a worm 30 through the side of the container and the melt is agitated by an oscillating piston 102 or by a rotating paddle. Reference is made to the introduction of sodium silicofluoride into aluminium to produce an aluminium-silicon alloy.
