Abstract
<PICT:0759740/III/1> The production of hydrogen by heating natural gas in the presence of a reduced nickel catalyst, or the thermal cracking of ammonia may be carried out in the vertical retort furnace shown in Fig. 1 and disclosed in the patent Specification (see Group XII). The catalyst falls through a reaction tube 2 from a hopper 1 in countercurrent to the gas introduced at 10, the reaction tube being heated externally by the furnace 3 and internally by a radiant tube 9. Effluent gases are removed through an offtake 11.
