Abstract

Calcium chloride is brought into intimate contact with sodium metal and heated in a hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature above 420 DEG C. until substantially all the sodium has been converted to sodium chloride, the reaction temperature being maintained below the temperature of fusion of the chloride mixture present during reaction. The reaction may be carried out in two stages in the first of which sodium metal in small amounts is reacted at 250 - 375 DEG C. till the desired amount of sodium has been added. The resulting mixture is then heated to a temperature above 420 DEG C. till the conversion of calcium to calcium hydride has taken place.ALSO:Calcium chloride is brought into intimate contact with sodium metal and heated in an inert gas atmosphere at a temperature above 420 DEG C until substantially all the sodium has been converted to p sodium chloride, the reaction temperature being maintained below the temperature of fusion of the chloride mixture present during reaction. The reaction may be carried out in two stages in the first of which sodium metal in small amounts is reacted at 250-375 DEG C. till the desired amount of sodium has been added. The resulting mixture is then heated to above 420 DEG C. till the reaction is complete.
