Abstract

<PICT:0810726/III/1> Borohydrides of metals, which form salt-like hydrides, e.g. alkali metals, are produced in a two-stage process wherein, in the first stage, boron halide is reacted with a metal borohydride to form diborane, which is reacted, in the second stage, with the hydride of the same metal to form metal borohydride, part of which is used for the production of diborane in the first stage. A solution of lithium borohydride in ether in vessel 1, equipped with an agitator, is reacted with boron trifluoride etherate, while scavenging gas may be introduced. The diborane formed passes through reflux to vessel 2 containing a suspension of lithium hydride in ether. One third more diborane than is required to react with all the lithium hydride in vessel 2 is produced from vessel 1 and the remainder passes on to vessel 3. Boron trifluoride is then reacted with the lithium borohydride in vessel 2 to form diborane, which passes into vessels 3 and 4, and so on. As a result 1/4 of the lithium borohydride produced is recovered, while the other 3/4 is used in the preparation of diborane. An alternative apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) shows a process with a closed cycle of units working on the above basis. It is stated that to start the reaction boron halide may be reacted with lithium hydride in vessel 1, and diborane from other sources may be added during the process.
