Abstract

A metal hydride is produced by reacting a finely divided alloy of the metal with hydrogen, the metal being alloyed with a metal which does not react with hydrogen. Alloys specified are magnesium-aluminium (35 per cent magnesium) and calcium-copper (25 per cent calcium). The alloy may be ground in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere. Temperatures of 100-300 DEG C or pressures of 100-200 atmospheres are specified. The finely divided alloy may be admixed with mercury or a mercury compound, e.g. mercuric chloride, as catalyst.
