Abstract

Silane is produced by reacting silicon tetrachloride with calcium aluminium hydride, magnesium aluminium hydride, or aluminium hydride in a carrier of tetrahydrofuran. Ca(AlH4)2, Mg(AlH4)2, or AlH3 are prepared by reacting 2 mols. AlCl3 with 4 or 3 mols. CaH2 or MgH2.AlCl3 is refluxed in 1 in THF while CaH2 is slurried in THF in 2. Requisite proportions of slurry and solution are mixed in 3 at, or close <FORM:0832333/III/1> to, the boiling point of THF, 66 DEG C., in a dry, oxygen-free, atmosphere, e.g. H2 or N2. The resulting solution is filtered, or decanted, off and reacted in 4 with SiCl4 as liquid, or in solution in THF at 10-66 DEG C., while an O2-free gas, e.g. A, N2, or H2, sweeps out the SiH4. After filtering off CaCl2, the THF solution of AlCl3 from 4 may be reused. As a modification of the process where AlH3 is the reactant, SiCl4 may be added at 3 to react with the AlH3 as it is formed, and the gas used to sweep out silane provides the O2-free atmosphere.
