Abstract

A cyclic process for producing sodium comprises reducing sodium carbonate with carbon in a high temperature reactor, condensing the sodium vapour to produce molten sodium and dross, fluxing the dross with sodium hydroxide and separating the flux, heating the flux in a low temperature reactor with additional sodium hydroxide and carbon to produce sodium, hydrogen and sodium carbonate, condensing the sodium and recycling the sodium carbonate. The sodium may be condensed at each stage in molten sodium. The high temperature reactor may be fed with briquettes of sodium carbonate, coke, and pitch and be operated at a temperature of 1200 DEG C.-1500 DEG C. under pressure of 0.5 atmosphere. The sodium condenser may be operated at a pressure of 1" of mercury. The flux may be fed in a liquid state to the low temperature reactor which is operated at 700-900 DEG C. U.S.A.
