Abstract
<PICT:0978795/C6-C7/1> In a process for recovering a light metal (e.g. calcium, sodium or cadmium) from a liquid solution containing the light metal and a heavy metal (e.g. copper, lead, uranium or thorium) by distillation in a still 5, maintained under vacuum by line 10, the solution is drawn up into the still via line 4 owing to the difference in pressure between the supply vessel and the still; the light metal evaporates from the solution and condenses on condenser 6, and the depleted solution flows out of the still via line 3 owing to the difference in pressure between the still and the receiver. In an example, calcium sulphide is electrolysed in cell 1 using molten copper-calcium alloy as cathode, whereby the calcium, produced by electrolysis, dissolves in the molten alloy to form a solution of calcium in copper which is drawn up line 4 into still 5. The still is heated, preferably electrically, to a temperature of 800-850 DEG C. When the cell 1 is at atmospheric pressure and the still is operated at a pressure of 5-0.1 mm. Hg., pipes 3 and 4 are 3 metres and 3.5 metres long, respectively. Condenser 6 is cooled by gas, introduced through line 7. When a sufficient quantity of calcium has collected on the condenser, the vacuum in the still is broken by admitting argon via valve 12, so that all the solution in the still drops down pipes 3 and 4 into cell 1.
