Abstract

Phosgene is recovered from waste gases containing phosgene and hydrogen chloride by passing the gases upwardly through a cooling apparatus which cools the gases to a temperature below the boiling point of phosgene but above that of hydrogen chloride, e.g. - 40 DEG to - 60 DEG C., down which cooling apparatus liquid phosgene, condensed from the waste gases by the cooling, trickles under gravity. Waste gases at 0-5 DEG C. enter tubular cooler 2, cooled by boiling difluorodichloromethane or difluoromonochloromethane, at 1, and pass upwardly <PICT:0737442/III/1> countercurrent to condensed liquid phosgene, which discharges into tank 4. Uncondensed gases pass through pipe 5 to washer 6, where the hydrogen chloride is extracted by water entering at 8 and is withdrawn as an aqueous solution at 7. Any inert gases remaining are exhausted through pipe 9 by fan 10, which maintains a slight subatmospheric pressure in the whole apparatus. In alternative apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) a pressure relief valve, preferably automatic, is inserted in pipe 5, so that the cooler 2 is maintained under slight superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 100-200 mm. of water, while the remainder of the apparatus is maintained by fan 10 under subatmospheric pressure, in order to avoid moisture being sucked into the cooler in the event of leaks, with consequent contamination of the phosgene by corrosion and metal chlorides.
