Abstract

<PICT:0928179/III/1> Gas, which contains HCl and which may contain acetic acid, acetyl chloride and acetic anhydride originating from the chlorination of acetic acid (e.g. by Cl2 at 100 DEG -150 DEG C.) in 1 is passed through 2 countercurrently to a flow of acetic acid in sections 8b and 8a of an absorption column 3 which may be packed or contain plates. The gas is cooled in the lower section 8b by withdrawing part of the acetic acid, which is introduced at 4, through 10 and pumped by 11 through a cooler 12 higher up the column 8b. Part of the gas which has been treated by acetic acid but which still contains HCl is withdrawn through 7, the remainder of the gas is passed to 5 countercurrently to a flow of acetic acid in 6 which is simultaneously cooled, e.g. by a liquid film cooler, the quantity of gas remaining is controlled to give a substantially saturated solution of HCl in acetic acid which may be withdrawn at either 9, an outlet leading to the reaction vessel 1, or at 10 as above. Alternatively the cooling and saturation of the acetic acid may be carried out in a liquid film cooler separate from sections 8a and 8b of column 3. The chlorination of the acetic acid, usually to form mono-chloracetic acid, may be performed in the presence of acetic anhydride or acetyl chloride as promoters, or S, P or I as catalysts.
