Abstract

Monovinyl-acetylene is separated from mixtures of gases containing also acetylene and its homologues or acrylonitrile by washing the cooled gas mixture with water to extract acid components and possibly acrylonitrile, and then extracting with a solvent mixture consisting of at least 50% by weight of acetone, in two stages, first to remove the compounds boiling at a higher temperature than monovinyl-acetylene, and preferably under pressure; second to extract the monovinyl-acetylene also under pressure, and using a lower temperature. A temperature of about 86 DEG C. is used in the first column, and the effluent gases then cooled to 5 DEG to 7 DEG C. in the second. The solvent used in addition to acetone may also contain acetaldehyde, water and divinyl acetylene formed in the acrylonitrile reactor.
