Abstract

Monovinylacetylene is continuously separated from a mixture thereof with acetylene, obtained by the process of converting acetylene to monovinylacetylene and containing from 5 to 20 per cent by weight of monovinylacetylene, by absorbing the monovinylacetylene in an inert liquid solvent absorptive to the monovinylacetylene and having a boiling-point of from 7 DEG to 80.36 DEG C., removing the unabsorbed acetylene, distilling the monovinylacetylene from the solvent and removing the solvent by distillation. The process is preferably carried out by passing the gas mixture countercurrent to the solvent in a scrubbing column maintained at a temperature at which only a small amount of acetylene dissolves, the resulting solution is warmed to drive off any absorbed acetylene and then passed to a distilling column to distil off the monovinylacetylene and then the solvent, leaving dissolved impurities, and the solvent is recycled to the scrubbing column. Pressures of atmospheric to 75 p.s.i.g. may be used. Preferred solvents boil between 30 DEG and 60 DEG C., specified solvents being acetone, methylene chloride, methanol, diethyl ether, acetaldehyde, propionic aldehyde, n-propyl chloride, dimethyl sulphide, n-pentane, n-hexane, benzene and dimethylamine.ALSO:Monovinylacetylene is continuously separated from a mixture thereof with acetylene, obtained by the process of converting acetylene to monovinylacetylene and containing from 5 to 20 per cent by weight of monovinylacetylene, by absorbing the monovinylacetylene in an inert liquid solvent having a boiling point of from 7 to 80.36 DEG C., removing the unabsorbed acetylene, distilling the monovinylacetylene from the solvent and removing the solvent by distillation.
