Abstract

<PICT:0587704/III/1> The process of the parent Specification is modified to enable organic liquids soluble in water, e.g., lower alcohols and ketones to be recovered continuously instead of batchwise by the provision of successive distillation columns 50, 60. The crude liquid is introduced through line 51 into distillation column 50 which is supplied at the base with live steam. Low boiling impurities, together with steam and some of the material to be recovered, are removed overhead as vapours, which are condensed in condenser 53 and separated into two liquid layers in decanter 54. The upper layer is partly returned as reflux to column 50 and the remainder sent to mixer 72. The lower aqueous layer is withdrawn through line 57 and added to the crude liquid supply. The liquid from the base of column 50 is passed through line 61 to column 60 which is supplied at the base with live steam. The material to be recovered is withdrawn, as vapour, overhead, condensed in condenser 63, and passed to drum 64; part of the condensate is returned as reflux to column 60 and the remainder is withdrawn to storage as product. The high boiling impurities are withdrawn throngh line 67 to decanter 68 from which the upper non-aqueous layer is removed through line 71 and sent to mixer 72 where mixing with the low boiling impurities from column 50 takes place. The mixture is introduced into wash tower 70 where it is countercurrently contacted with water, the aqueous extract so obtained being added to the crude liquid supply through line 75. A modification is described in which column 60 is heated by means of closed steam.
