Abstract
Maleic anhydride is recovered from gases obtained by the vapour phase catalytic oxidation of organic compounds by injecting continuously into the hot gas stream a solution containing 35-75, preferably 50-65 per cent by weight of maleic acid, cooling the vapours to condense maleic anhydride but not water, usually at 60-100, preferably 70-80 DEG C., scrubbing the remaining vapours with a 35-75 per cent maleic acid solution to remove uncondensed maleic anhydride, and recycling the maleic acid solution for injection into the hot gas stream. The hot gases are preferably at a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. before injection of maleic acid solution; the latter is preferably formed and recycled at a temperature of 35-90 DEG C., more preferably at 50-70 DEG C. In an example, the gases from the oxidation of benzene with air at 435 DEG C. are cooled to 245 DEG C. and treated as above.
