Abstract
Oxidation products of phosphorus are prepared by treating a mixture of P vapour and water vapour with O2 at 80-160 DEG C., the atomic ratio of O2 to P being within the range 0.01 to 2, and condensing the reaction product. The P to water vapour weight ratio should be 1:10 to 1:100. The O2 may be diluted with inert gas, e.g. N2 and/or CO2, or may be air. Condensation is effected by injecting water into the reaction mixture. Yellow P in the condensate may be extracted by a solvent, e.g. CS2. The product contains 87-93% P, 6-13% O2, and H, e.g. 0.7 or 0.8%, as remainder.
