Abstract

A process for the preparation of 3-(1-tetralyl) propan-1-ol comprises dehydrating 7-phenyl-heptane-1, 4-diol with from 3 to 5 times its weight of polyphosphoric acids having a P2O5 content of from 82 to 84%, at a temperature of from 90 to 110 DEG C. The product is recovered from the reaction mixture by diluting the latter with water, extracting with solvent and recovering from the organic extract by distillation.
