Abstract
Naphthalene having a solidification point above 78 DEG C. is obtained by cooling, e.g. to 15-25 DEG C., a naphthalene-containing tar oil having an acid oil content of at least 7%, separating the crystals and covering with 20-120% of the crystals of a caustic alkali or caustic phenolate solution at a temperature above the solidification point of the product. The acid oil may be carbolated oil obtained from the tar and need not be recovered separately or some of the oil obtained by centrifuging the crystals may be recycled to dilute the feed. The naphthalene oil should contain less than 10% of methyl naphthalene oil. The oil is cooled at a speed slower than 2.5 DEG C. per hour to 5-35 DEG C. below the solidification point of the mixture and the washing solution may be 0.5-23 DEG C. hotter than this solidification point. The caustic solution can be reused until saturated with acid oils which can be recovered by treatment with carbon dioxide.
