Abstract

2:5-Dichlorophenol is produced by the cooling of a mixture of dichlorophenols, containing at least 50 per cent of 2:5-dichlorophenol, to 0-5 DEG C., until 1/2 to 1/3 of the mixture separates out, and removing the solid phase. The mixture may be produced by the hydrolysis of a mixture of 1:2:3- and 1:2:4-trichlorobenzenes, which may be obtained by the dehydrohalogenation of benzene hexachloride. The precipitated solid may be separated by centrifuging from the liquor. Crude or purified trichlorobenzenes obtained as above may be used, hydrolysed with caustic alkali in alcohols or glycols.
