Abstract
Cholesterol is prepared by dissolving crude cholesterol in an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, e.g. potassium, sodium or lithium hydroxides containing at least 85 per cent. by volume of alcohol, crystallizing cholesterol from the solution thus formed and separating said crystallized cholesterol. The crystallized cholesterol is washed with separate portions of alcohol and water.
