Abstract
The invention comprises 15-aldehydopentadecanoic acid, 1 : 14-dialdehydotetradecane and mixtures consisting essentially of both 15-aldehydopentadecanoic acid or 1 : 14-dialdehydotetradecane or a mixture containing both these aldehydes is produced by treating 15,16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic or 2,15,16-trihydroxyhexadecanoic acid or a mixture of said hydroxy acids respectively with acetic acid and sodium bismuthate, heating the mixture to a temperature of 45-65 DEG C. and continuing such temperature to form the aldehyde compound or compounds. Aldehydopentadecanoic acid may be produced by suspending 15,16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid in acetic acid, adding sodium bismuthate or lead tetra-acetate and heating the mixture to a temperature of 45-65 DEG C. Aldehydopentadecanoic acid may be produced by suspending an alkali metal salt of 15, 16-dihydroxydecanoic acid in acetic acid, adding sodium periodate and heating the mixture at a temperature of 45-65 DEG C. The products of the process may be hydrogenated catalytically to obtain 15-hydroxypentadecanoic acid and 1,14-dihydroxytetradecane which may be converted to tetradecamethylene carbonate. In examples a mixture of aldehydopentadecanoic acid and dialdehydotetradecane is obtained by treating a ustilic acid mixture with sodium bismuthate whilst suspended in acetic acid (1); a similar mixture of products is separated by treatment with caustic soda and ether into the two components (2); aldehydopentadecanoic acid is obtained by treating 15,16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid suspended in acetic acid with lead acetate (3); dialdehydotetradecane is obtained by treating 2,15,16-trihydroxyhexadecanoic acid suspended in acetic acid with sodium bismuthate (4); and a mixture containing aldehydopentadecanoic acid is obtained when a solution of the potassium salt of the ustilic acid mixture is treated with a solution of sodium periodate (5).
