18a -Glycyrrhetinic acid is prepared by heating the 18b -epimer in an alcoholic or aqueous alcoholic solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably using sodium or potassium hydroxide in aqueous n-propanol. Specifications 798,655, 843,133, 843,135, 843,137 and 870,651 also are referred to.
