Abstract

b -Aminomethyl tropolone is prepared by submitting b -carbamylmethyl tropolone to the Hofmann degradation, preferably using an alkaline solution of a hypochlorite or hypobromite at between 0 DEG and 15 DEG C. In an example: b -carbamylmethyl tropolone in dilute sodium hydroxide is cooled and treated with aqueous sodium hypochlorite; after standing for two hours the mixture is acidified, filtered aqueous sodium hypochlorite; after standing and the pH adjusted to 8, when b -aminomethyl tropolone separates.
