Abstract

The invention comprises a method of obtaining 2 : 4 : 5 - trichlorophenoxyacetic acid in two stages, by heating 2 : 5-dichlorophenol and monochloracetic acid in presence of caustic alkali to give the sodium salt of 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and treating this with a molar quantity of chlorine passed through its aqueous suspension. In an example, sodium 2 : 5-dichlorophenoxyacetate is treated with the required quantity of chlorine in aqueous solution.
