Abstract

Modified calcium carbonate is obtained by heating at a temperature higher than 50 DEG C. a suspension of calcium carbonate together with an aqueous solution of an alkali carbonate, which is defined as being sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate or ammonium carbonate and which is present in an amount sufficient to provide from 1 to 50% by weight of the alkali carbonate based on the calcium carbonate; the modified calcium carbonate being then separated from the liquid and dried. The modified calcium carbonate thus produced, can be used to produce aqueous suspensions of calcium carbonate containing at least one part of calcium carbonate to one part of water, these suspensions have a uniform flowing power.
