Abstract
Cyanuric acid is produced by heating a solution of urea and/or biuret in sulpholane and/or an alkyl-substituted sulpholane which is stable at the temperature the process is carried out, preferably 2:4-dimethyl sulpholane, and recovering the cyanuric acid formed. The solution is preferably heated to above 180 DEG C., and preferably contains an excess of the sulpholane by weight. The cyanuric acid, which is deposited as a solid, may be recovered by filtration, washed with alcohol and ether, dissolved in sodium hydroxide and then reprecipitated by hydrochloric acid.
