Abstract

2-Amino-3-carboxyl-pyrazine and its 5,6-dimethyl derivative are obtained by treating lunazine and 6,7-dimethyl lunazine respectively with aqueous caustic alkali, preferably at a temperature above boiling. The temperature is then reduced advantageously, ammonia is liberated from the pressure vessel, the solution is boiled to remove remaining dissolved ammonia, hydrochloric acid is added, the solution is cooled and the solid is collected, washed and dried. Examples 1, 2, 3 and 4 relate to the preparation of 2 - amino - 3 - carboxyl - pyrazine using respectively 3 mols, 2 mols, 1 mol of sodium hydroxide and 3 mols of potassium hydroxide per mol. of lunazine and heating in a pressure vessel for 2 to 5 hours at 170 DEG to 188 DEG C. Example 5 relates to the similar conversion of 6,7 - dimethyl - lunazine to 2 - amino - 3 - carb - oxyl-5,6-dimethyl-pyrazine.
