Abstract
Trifluoroacetic acid is prepared by reacting m-aminobenzotrifluoride with a permanganate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal dissolved in aqueous acetic and/or trifluoroacetic acid, preferably containing 35-45 per cent by weight of water. The use of aqueous trifluoroacetic acid is preferred since recovery of the product is thereby simplified. The preferred temperature is 80-100 DEG C. Permanganates instanced are those of potassium and barium. The acid is isolated as an alkali metal salt and obtained therefrom by, e.g. steam distillation from an acid medium. In an example m-aminobenzotrifluoride in aqueous acetic acid is heated under reflux at 80-90 DEG C. and solid potassium permanganate added in small portions, the reaction product is diluted with water, made alkaline with caustic soda, and boiled with additional potassium permanganate to remove impurities, trifluoroacetic acid being recovered as its potassium salt from the mixed acetates and trifluoroacetates obtained after the removal of the impurities.
