Abstract
The preparation of alkali and alkaline-earth metal iodides from iodide-iodate mixtures or by the action of iodine upon the corresponding metal oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, or bicarbonates in the presence of water is effected under heat with the addition of formaldehyde, formic acid, oxalic acid, or salts of the two acids, which act as reducing agents and yield on reduction only carbon dioxide with or without water and it may be the metal for formation of the iodide. The preparation of sodium, potassium, and calcium iodides is described. The process may be applied to the recovery of iodides from the waste lyes obtained in the production of iodoform from alcohol, which contain formate, iodate, iodide, and alkali carbonate, by adding iodine and if necessary alkali hydroxide in quantities sufficient to oxidize all the formate present.
