Abstract
Carbon, which has been used for dechlorinating water, is revivefied and the compounds known as "Mellogens" are removed therefrom by treatment of the carbon with an alkaline solvent and with a strongly active oxidizing agent. The alkaline solvent may be an aqueous solution of a hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate of an alkali metal or of ammonium. The oxidizing agent may be an aqueous solution of chlorine, hypochlorous acid or hypochlorite. The treatment may be carried out with solutions at a raised temperature. Alkali retained by the carbon may be removed therefrom by subsequent treatment with soluble salts of alkaline earths or of magnesium, for example chlorides, hypochlorites, sulphates or nitrates.ALSO:Carbon, which has been used for dechlorinating water, is revivified and the compounds known as "Mellogens" are removed therefrom by treatment of the carbon with an alkaline solvent and with a strongly active oxidizing agent.
