Abstract

Soluble carbonates and hydrates and insoluble fluorides are produced by treating a fluoride such as sodium fluoride with a carbonate or hydrate of a metal forming an insoluble fluoride, the reaction being effected with heat and pressure, preferably in presence of a small quantity of water, less than enough to dissolve a soluble product or only enough to produce a saturated solution. The invention is described with reference to the reaction between sodium fluoride and calcium carbonate, in which case the presence of carbon dioxide is advantageous. This may be secured by adding a substance which evolves carbon dioxide, such as sodium bicarbonate.ALSO:Soluble carbonate and hydrates and insoluble fluorides are produced by treating a fluoride such as sodium fluoride with a carbonate or hydrate of a metal forming an insoluble fluoride, the reaction being effected with heat and pressure, preferably in presence of a small quantity of water, less than enough to dissolve the soluble product or only enough to produce a saturated solution. The invention is described with reference to the reaction between sodium fluoride and calcium carbonate, in which case the presence of carbon dioxide is advantageous. This may be secured by adding a substance which evolves carbon dioxide, such as sodium bicarbonate.
