Abstract
546,751. Magnesium fluoride. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS), Ltd., ADAMS, B. A., and LANG, A. E. W. Jan. 28, 1941, No. 1133. [Class 1 (iii)] Magnesium fluoride is obtained by a process in which fluorspar is heated with an excess of concentrated solution of magnesium chloride. The magnesium fluoride is separated by filtration, and the residual liquor treated with magnesium carbonate to obtain magnesium chloride for use in repeating the process. The magnesium carbonate may be obtained by reacting with carbon dioxide magnesium oxide or hydroxide obtained from sea water or other brines or other sources. The magnesium oxide or hydroxide may be added to the filtrate from the magnesium fluoride or reacted with carbondioxide in situ. Hydrochloric acid may be added to the mixture of fluorspar and magnesium chloride.
