Abstract
In extracting alumina from raw anhydrous calcium aluminates by leaching either with water to obtain a solution of calcium aluminates or with diluted alkali lyes to obtain a solution of calcium and alkali aluminates, carbon dioxide is introduced during the leaching process so as to control the "Caustic Ratio" (C.R.) of the resulting solution to a figure of not less than 1, the C.R. being defined as the ratio of the molecules of caustic lime plus the molecules of caustic alkali present in solution to the molecules of alumina present in solution. The carbon dioxide may be used in the gaseous form and/or as an over-carbonated solution.
