Abstract
Alkali metal chlorite solutions are produced by absorbing chlorine dioxide in an aqueous suspension of alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g. lime, and carbon, separating the solid constituents, and treating the alkaline earth metal chlorite solution with an alkali metal compound to form alkali metal chlorite and a difficulty soluble alkaline earth metal compound which is separated. Sodium sulphate or hydroxide are suitably used as precipitants, and precipitation may be completed by the addition of alkali metal carbonate or oxalate. Specification 460,374 is referred to.
