Abstract

540,044. Alkaline earth carbonates. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). Dec. 7, 1939, No. 31729. [Class 1 (iii)] An alkaline earth metal carbonate is obtained in the form of relatively fine slow setting particles suitable for use as pigments by digesting a relatively coarse alkaline earth metal carbonate with a concentrated solution of an alkali metal hydroxide which is sufficiently concentrated to react with the carbonate and diluting with a substantial amount of water or aqueous alkaline solution to precipitate the carbonate. Thus, calcium carbonate or limestone in paste form is treated with a solution of sodium hydroxide in excess of 25, e.g. 50 per cent. by weight and diluted with water to obtain a fine precipitate.
