Abstract

Hexamethylenetetramine is prepared by reacting formaldehyde with ammonium sulphate and the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of an alkaline earth metal in aqueous medium, the hexamethylenetetramine being isolated from the aqueous component of the reaction mixture. In example (1) formaldehyde in solution, chalk and ammonium sulphate are mixed and the hexamethylenetetramine recovered from the solution. To further purify the product ammonium phosphate may be added to the solution or the solution may be treated with barium carbonate and carbon dioxide. (2) Barium carbonate (Witherite) may replace the chalk in example (1).
