Abstract
Acetaldehyde is made by passing a stream of acetylene mixed with oxygen or air through an acid solution of ferrous sulphate in the presence of copper salts and metallic mercury. In an example, acetylene with from 2 to 20 per cent oxygen is bubbled through a solution containing ferrous and copper sulphates and sulphuric acid with metallic mercury, heated to 60 to 80 DEG C.
