Abstract

Iron is removed from solution of sulphuric acid liquors containing it, by adding to the liquor a compound of trivalent iron, neutralizing with excess ammonia, passing oxygen or gas containing it, e.g. air, therethrough and removing the precipitated hydrated ferrosoferric and ferric oxides to give an iron-free solution of ammonium sulphate from which the solid may be obtained. The concentration of iron in the liquor to be treated is preferably not more than 2 gm./100 ccs. The trivalent iron compound, e.g. ferric nitrate and ferric and/or ferrosoferric oxides or hydrated oxides from the last step of the process, may be added to the liquor in amount to give a ratio of ferric to ferrous iron of at least one, the total concentration of iron in the liquor being preferably not more than 9 gm./100 ccs. The liquor may also contain ammonium sulphate, e.g. ammonium sulphate solution recycled from the last step of the process, in amount not exceeding 25 gm./100 ccs. of liquor. The addition of the iron compound, the addition of the ammonia as gas or liquor, and the oxidation, may be effected in separate vessels.
